Lipitor (atorvastatin calcium) is part of a group of medications known as statins that work to decrease the cholesterol produced by the liver. Only 20% of cholesterol comes directly from our diet. The remaining cholesterol is actually produced in the liver. By blocking this production, Lipitor causes the liver to pull the dietary cholesterol from the blood stream. This results in lower total cholesterol  levels.

High cholesterol is considered the leading risk factor for heart disease.  With one in five adults having high cholesterol, it’s not surprising that heart disease has become the leading cause of death and illness in the United States. Most treatment plans for high cholesterol start out with modifications to diet and exercise; however, in 2 out of 3 people these approaches will not work alone. Lipitor has been clinically proven to lower bad cholesterol (LDL) levels by 39-60% (depending on dose) in those who fail to respond to just diet and exercise. Best of all, Lipitor can lower the risk for heart attack or stroke in patients who have multiple risk factors for heart disease such as: age, smoking, high blood pressure, low good cholesterol (HDL), heart disease in the family, or diabetes.
There are those who should not take Lipitor. If you have significant liver disease, you should avoid Lipitor use. Excessive alcohol consumption should be avoided while on Lipitor. Those who are pregnant or nursing should not take Lipitor as potentially serious complications may occur in the fetus or infant. If you suspect you may be pregnant, stop taking Lipitor and contact your physician immediately. Make sure your physician is aware of your entire medical history including any medications you are taking prior to prescribing Lipitor.

Unfortunately, Lipitor has been associated with certain severe side effects and complications including muscle wasting, kidney and liver damage. Contact your physician immediately if you experience muscle problems like weakness, muscle pain or tenderness, fever, or severe fatigue that have no known cause. Also let your physician know if you experience vomiting, a darkening of your urine color, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or severe stomach pain. Other, less serious side effects of Lipitor treatment may include: headache, constipation, diarrhea, gas, upset stomach and stomach pain, rash, and muscle and joint pain. These side effects are usually mild and may go away over the course of treatment.

Lipitor dosages vary and must be adjusted periodically throughout treatment by your physician. Your physician will monitor your cholesterol levels and liver functions through periodic blood tests and then may adjust your dose up or down. Always take the dose prescribed for you. Do not take more or less of Lipitor as decreased effectiveness or over-dose may occur. Lipitor tablets should be swallowed whole with a full glass of water. You should maintain a low-fat diet while on Lipitor.

Lipitor, along with diet and exercise, can reduce your risk of serious and potentially life-threatening conditions. Speak with your physician about your risk factors and develop a plan with them for reducing these factors before it’s too late.
